Frequently Asked Questions
How it Works
The Basic Concept
- Artists upload the best 20 seconds of their music.
- Voters select a genre, hear two songs, and vote for the track they like best in a blind taste-test.
- As they vote, users earn credit to spend on the site.
It’s that simple.

Fair Shake (Non-Timed Version): Users listen to each track sample in full and pick the one they like better. After voting, they are presented with more information about the artists they just heard, and users can show appreciation by tipping the artist right from the results page. Information is saved to the voter’s user account for later discovery. Snap Judgment (Timed Version): In this version, music discovery takes on a gaming twist. Users take part in timed rounds, listening to only as much as they need to make a snap decision. They continue to do so until their timed round is up. Then, users can scroll through their results and discover new music in bulk, before proceeding to the next round. Voting history is saved to the user’s account for later engagement.
The below features are unlocked after artists upload a track to SoundOff.
Add a Mailing List
Allows users to enter their email on an artist’s page and join the artist’s mailing list.
Add A Gig
Features an upcoming show or performance in the public Featured Gigs calender. Users can sort this by location to find nearby shows, allowing artists to reach a local audience.
Feature Your Profile
Showcases a profile page in the “Featured Artists” section of the website, encouraging users to learn more about who you are and what you do. “Featured Artists” can be filtered by location, allowing users to find musicians of interest in their area. Upon purchase, this will last for 7 days.
Feature Your Track
Put your track in front of more users by featuring it. Your track will appear alongside the battle results, giving you more exposure within a genre. Upon purchase, this will last for 7 days.
FastTrack Your Track
Think your track has what it takes? Put it on the FastTrack and see how fast it succeeds... or fails! Your track will appear in more battles, and users with “Good Ears” become more likely to hear your track. It’s like auditioning for a room full of A&R lackeys, giving you quick results - for better or for worse. Upon purchase, this will last for 7 days.
Challenge A Track
In normal circumstances, SoundOff randomly selects two tracks within a genre. As a result, voters rarely see the same battle twice. However, using “Challenge A Track,” artists can pair against a rival track in the same genre so they always appear together. The two artists can wager on the outcome, and they can both share the link with friends, using the power of the SoundOff community to settle the score. These custom SoundOffs expire after a certain amount of time, and the winner is awarded the terms of the wager. Upon purchase, this will last for 3 days.
Sponsor a CAPTCHA
To prove that our listeners are human, SoundOff uses the CAPTCHA system, a form of Internet verification. CAPTCHAs are seen by every single voter at least once. Now, you can make that exposure work for you by Sponsoring a CAPTCHA. Make your band name, album name, or track name the required CAPTCHA for everyone to type in. It helps us keep the site fun, while giving you an added bit of branding edge for your group. Upon purchase, this will last for 50 showings.
Credit can be earned in three ways:
- Users downloading your track (opt in). If artists choose, voters can use their credit to purchase a track for download. Artists receive credit for every “sale,” which they can use to further their exposure on the site.
- Getting tipped. As voters listen to music, they have the option to tip the artist a specified amount.
- Voting on tracks. Users earn credit as they place votes on the site. Picking the song that is currently “trending” earns even more credit than a regular vote. Users are also able to wager their votes, in special cases.
Encountering a “SoundOff”
If you come across two “trending” tracks while voting, you are allowed the chance to wager on which track is doing better at that time. If you think one track has a higher win percentage, place your credit on the line for the chance to win double!
Credit can be purchased through SoundOff. This way, if you have an upcoming show or a new song you want to promote fast, you do not have to wait to build up credit.
Tip An Artist
If you like a song, reward the artist by throwing some change in their virtual cup. Tipping rewards an artist for a job well-done, and they can use the credit to help expose their work to a greater audience.
Download a Track
If an artist elects to share his song for download, you can purchase the track using your credit and add it to your personal music collection. Simply click the “Download” button next to the song to start the downloading process.
Yes – by navigating to your profile page, you can see the tracks you have posted. Simply click your track and click “Unpublish Track” to take the song out of battle. To delete the song from history entirely, click “Delete Track”.
Clicking “Unpublish Track” will take the song out of battle, but it will not delete the history. You will still be able to see how it performed, and it will still show up on the Leaderboard, if applicable. To delete the song from history entirely, click “Delete Track”.
Similar to unlocking a track, you can also use your credits to unlock all of an artist’s tracks at once. The nice thing about this feature? It gives you full access to their FUTURE tracks as well! So become a real fan of the band, and unlock their entire SoundOff.fm catalog.
Tracks become unlocked and stored in your profile as you see them in battle. If you want, you can also use your credits to Unlock a Track without having seen it in battle. This works great for sharing music - if you find a great song, you can share it with friends, and they can listen to your recommendations without having to encounter them in battle first.
If a track has been placed into an incorrect genre, a user should delete the track and re-upload it. Upon uploading users can select the correct genre. Currently it is not possible to change the genre of a track once it's been added since that action would invalidate all previous votes, challenges and results, including a tracks score & leaderboard positions.
This depends on which voting mode you’re in.
Fair Shake: +5 for voting, +15 if you vote for a Trending Track
Snap Judgment: +1 for voting, +3 if you vote for a Trending Track
